Galaxy Tab Upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.3 w/ real-vpn

For those who wanted to Update their Android Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3 (but are having problems with Samsung KIES) to the latest, most stable, better memory management, better battery life, PURELY STOCK ROM...this is the procedure.


First, you need to root your device. Below is the link.

Second, you need to install SGT-Bootloader-Patch-v1.00.apkBelow is the link.

Third, you need to download the ff:
1. Main Firmware (227MB)
2. Pit File (557b)
3. dbdata.tar (1.92Kb)
4. Rooted Kernel (5.99MB)
5. Flashing Program (196.71K) ODIN 1.7



Upgrade Procedure:


1. Make sure that your Galaxy Tab is powered off & its USB cable is disconnected from the computer.
2. Go to download mode. You can do this, by pressing the Volume Down button and the Power button together until you get the following image appearing on your Tab’s screen
3. Now connect your Tab to the computer with the USB cable. Then open the flashing program ODIN 1.7


4. Now click on the “PIT” button, and a file selection window should open. Look for the following file “gt-p1000_mr.pit” in the extracted folder and select it. Next click the “PDA” button, and select the “P1000XXJQ1_P1000XX....HOME.tar” file. Then click start.  (process will take 2-3mins)


5. Once you’ve seen the green “PASS!” notification, it means success! By now, if you look at the Tab, it would have rebooted itself. It should be rebooting into the stock Samsung ROM. Before the start up animation, long press power button 'til it off powered. Close ODIN 1.7


6. Back to download mode by pressing the Volume Down button and the Power button together & open ODIN 1.7


7. Next click the “PDA” button, and select the “dbdata.tar” file. (Un-check Re-Partition) Then click start. Again, before the start up animation, long press power button 'til it off powered.


8. Go to Recovery Mode. Press the power button and up volume button. After 5 seconds lift up the power button still pressing down the up button. Go down to wipe factory data reset and press YES using HOME button. Then press REBOOT using HOME button. Before the start up animation, long press power button 'til it off powered.

Back to download mode by pressing the Volume Down button and the Power button together & open ODIN 1.7

10. Next click the “PDA” button, and select the “CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar” file. (Un-check Re-Partition) Then click start. (process will take 2-3mins)

Click next.. next... next... & ENJOY YOUR SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB, RUNNING AT GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 ROOTED





VPN Set-up:

1) install openvpn installer and the binaries.. (http://www.mediafire.com/?ahxaufw71598aon)
  • run openvpn installer using root explorer or install from market
  • click install > install > /system/xbin/ > /system/xbin/bb
  • check this directory if the installation is successful:
    /system/xbin/openvpn 
2) i
nstall busybox (http://www.4shared.com/get/UbdBpNeP/BusyBox_installer_v341.html)
  • check this directory if the installation is successful:
    /system/xbin/busybox
3)  install openvpn settings (http://www.mediafire.com/?b1r7ay2cf1rkd3d)
  • go to option > advanced >
  • check load tun kernel module
  • set path to openvpn binary: /system/xbin/openvpn
  • go to tun module setting > load module using > insmod
  • set path to tun module:
    ---if you've downloaded a separate tun.ko (http://www.mediafire.com/?s3q49f203ivm33g), you can place it on your sdcard. make sure to set the correct path
-Navigate to folder /system/xbin/
-Mount folder as R/W (there is a button you can click at the top right of the Root explorer UI)
-Scroll and look for the file OPENVPN --> Long press openvpn and choose Permissions
-Put a check on the following:
User: Read + Write + Execute
Group: Read + Execute
Others: Read + Execute
-Press Menu and Create a new folder. Name it: bb (system/xbin/bb/)
5) open terminal emulator and type: (http://www.mediafire.com/?6tgns542kfd1ob3)
  • --edit "if busybox is in /system/xbin/busybox"
su
busybox ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/xbin/bb/ifconfig
busybox ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/xbin/bb/route
6) go back to Root Explorer, navigate to /system/xbin and Mount as R/O
7) on your sdcard create a folder named "openvpn" w/o the quotes and place your vpn config files there.
Open account here  http://real-vpn.com/ (first 5000 only! hurry up!)

  1. Bro, any chance you know where to get the tun module (tun.ko) for other kernels?

    I'm using this CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS ( for galaxy tab gsm ) kernel version 2.6.35.7
